Working with olive wood – a wood with character

Hello,

My name is Michel, and I’m a woodturner. Today I’d like to talk to you about a type of wood I’m particularly fond of: olive wood.

The olive tree is more than just a type of wood; it is a symbol. It evokes the Mediterranean, the sun, wisdom, and patience. But for me, it is above all a dense, lively, and magnificent wood that I take pleasure in working with, despite (or perhaps because of) its quirks.

What makes it unique is its distinctive grain: irregular veins, colors ranging from golden blond to dark brown, and sometimes even almost black highlights. Every piece of olive wood tells a story. You can sense that it grew slowly and has stood the test of time.

When turning, this wood requires both precision and a gentle touch. It can be hard to cut, and it may split or crack, but when you take your time, it reveals an incredibly smooth, satin-like finish. I often use it for items such as:

  • Pens or cups
  • Decorative items

And then there’s the scent. When I work with fresh olive wood, it gives off a warm, almost sweet fragrance that fills the workshop. It’s a wood that speaks to the senses, not just to the eyes.

I always choose my olive wood carefully, often sourcing it locally from prunings or old trees. I love the idea of giving this fine wood a second life by transforming it into an everyday object or a one-of-a-kind piece.

If you have a piece of olive wood and are thinking about what to do with it, please don’t hesitate to contact me. This wood deserves to be treated with respect and showcased to its full potential.

See you soon in the workshop,

Michel
