Wild pear tree

The wild pear tree (Pyrus pyraster) of the Rosaceae family is a species of pear tree. This tree is quite rare, and it is difficult to distinguish it from the common pear tree. It is a tree with limited growth, reaching up to 15 meters in height; however, it can live for 300 years. Its bark is fissured and scaly. It has thorns on its branches, and its leaves are simple, toothed, and petiolate. The leaf blade is oval or rounded and glossy on top. Fruits: small, tart pears, 3 to 4 cm in size.

It is very often used as a rootstock for common pear trees.

When turned, wild pear wood is a fairly hard wood with a brown to reddish hue and beautiful grain.

The finishes and polish are exceptional, with incredible durability.

I must admit I have a particular fondness for this wood, which is unfortunately hard to find.
