Field Elm

The field elm is a majestic tree planted for the long term in a park, alongside oaks, maples, tulip trees, cedars, and more.

The field elm is a species of deciduous tree in the Ulmaceae family. The oldest specimens were decimated by the Dutch elm disease epidemic, and planting it is still not recommended, as the disease continues to evolve into increasingly devastating strains…

These are very beautiful trees that can live for several centuries. They grow fairly quickly. The mature wood has a beautiful reddish hue and is remarkably hard and durable, making it highly sought after in cabinetmaking.

When it comes to woodturning, elm is really only interesting for its burl, which is a marvel. While elm is excellent for cabinetmaking, when it comes to woodturning, personally, I haven’t found that special something that really captivates me. On the other hand, polishing and finishing it are a real pleasure.
